Steve was turning the big 5-0 and upon chatting about what he wanted to do, he decided against the big birthday party and instead pay to go away for a few days over his birthday. So after searching for a few weeks we made a shortlist of three properties we liked the look of, three dates we were able to go, and we took the list into Thomas Cook. The Old Corn Mill was top of the list and we were able to book it for his actual birthday itself.
When we pulled up to the property, before we even set foot inside, it was apparent this was something special.

Inside, there was a spacious hall and leading off this was an adequate sized kitchen and the largest living room I've ever been in. Complete with log burning fire and massive dining table.

On the first floor, there were two double bedrooms. One en-suite, and one with a balcony. My parents took the en-suite and we took the balcony. The en-suite bedroom was vast in size, and it had a very spacious bathroom too. Our bedroom was cosy, but the sound of the waterfall at night more than made up for it.

Up another set of windy wooden stairs we reached the top of the building, which was home to two twin bedrooms and another bathroom. The kids took these rooms.

The property was surrounded by woodland, waterfalls and streams. When we first arrived, the weather had been so cold that everywhere was frozen.
On Steve's birthday itself, the Sunday, we happened upon a pub/restaurant called The Berwyn Arms, in Glyndyfrdwy (between Corwen and Llangollen) and decided to have a meal in the afternoon so we could relax in the Mill with a drink in the evening. I'm a firm believer in credit where credit is due, so - this has to be said. The manners of all the staff were exemplory. Cheery, smiling, polite, friendly. The food, considering we were a table of eight and the place was very busy in addition - was cooked to perfection, piping hot, and all delivered at the same time. It's a shame we live so far away (in time, not distance) or this would be our permanent eating house of choice. The Berwyn Arms also had a little indoor play area attached to it, and the kids had half an hour after, letting off some steam. Absolutely ideal for families and highly recommended.

So, all in all a wonderful short break to a beautiful place. Just felt like home from home. We can't wait to go back again. Soon we hope.
